Twenty five songs in twenty five blogs in twenty five days in twenty five minutes

These were the rules that I set myself at the beginning of December when I decided to complete a musical advent calendar on this website.

Blogging, as a discipline, is still in its infancy. But already the major traits of a successful blog are well established. From the reader’s perspective a blog needs to have an identity: a voice, an angle or a skew. It needs to be updated frequently – and all the better if it is quick enough to comment on topical events in real-time (a phrase I expect us to be hearing much more often next year). We’re constantly reminded of the needs of a blog’s readership, but what about the resources of the blogger themselves?

This is an important point and one which is much rarely tackled. Bluntly put, you can’t make much money from a blog. Of all the 140 million blogs in existence, I’d be surprised if more than a few thousand of them generated any significant revenue under their own steam. Of course they have massive advantages: they offer a swift route to publication, they give you a voice, and they can raise your profile or that of your company or organisation. All important and valuable points, but still, you can’t spend all day on them.

I am, of course, talking about blogs in a business context here. Those who run a blog as a hobby can spend as much time on them as they wish, but because blogging is an important part of my job, doing the Vibe Box was a good exercise in getting things done quickly. Twenty five minutes in the morning or evening to write something down, find an embedded code, tag it up and let it loose.

I got most of them done within this time schedule – some took a little longer, but then others (when I was busy with other things) went up in about five minutes.
